A Brief History of Solar PV in the UK
Solar Energy is not a new concept, but the last decade has seen a vast increase in the number of households choosing solar energy to power their homes. Before the Government introduced the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) in 2010, solar PV was a cottage industry. The idea of producing enough energy from the sun to make it viable here in the UK was not generally accepted.

A few companies serviced those who were passionate about reducing their impact on the environment and who had sufficient resources to finance a solar PV system. Whilst the systems were capable of producing a decent amount of energy, the price was very high. At the time of the FiT was introduced it was common to pay between £15,000 - £25,000 for a 4kW system.

The cost of materials has reduced significantly over the past four years, making solar PV viable for a most people. A quality 4kW installation should in most cases cost no more than £6,000 fully installed. Smaller systems can be installed from £3,000.
